Why Wix.com and Other Free Website Builders Will Cost You More
January 22, 2018
If you’re a small business owner, you’ve probably seen TV and internet ads for “free” website programs such as Wix or Weebly. That sure sounds great, huh? Get a free, professionally designed website for your business in a short amount of time. But as a business owner who knows a scam when you see one, these offers don’t hold up and might even end up costing you more in the long run. Here’s a few reason why:
1. You don’t own anything.
When you hire someone to develop you a website you’re hiring them to build you a product. A product that you actually own. When you go in on a “free” website you’re not actually walking away with anything. Sure, you have a domain name that shows a website, but if you end up wanting to migrate your site so you can build something bigger, forget it. Any amount of time you’ve invested into the process will be a sunk cost.
2. You still have to build it.
This is perhaps the most obvious hidden cost in a free website builder. You still have to build the website yourself. As a business owner you should have an idea of how much your time is worth. If it takes you 10 hours to figure out how to use one of these programs and then another 20 hours to actually build it, is it still “free?” One of the benefits of hiring a local web designer is that you’re hiring a professional to do the hard work for you which will save you time and ultimately money.
3. You’re limited in terms of features.
Let’s say you manage to invest the time in building a “free” website and then later decide it would be great if it had a feature that your competitor’s website has. Well if it’s not a part of the framework then you’re stuck. The frameworks of these website programs are limited and restrictive. Even if you wanted to hire a professional web developer to add in new features, there are usually limits to what’s actually possible. One of the benefits of having your own website is that you can hire a developer to program just about anything with no restrictions.
4. You won’t get far before the upsells start showing up.
You’ve see their commercials on TV and you know they have employees. How can a business that offers a free product afford their payroll? Because like any intelligent business owner, you know there’s always a catch. You might be able to get in the door without paying but if you want a website that will actually produce results and get you new customers you should prepare to be paying for it. The free website companies love to wait until you’ve invested your time into building your site and then bombard you with all of the extras you need to purchase if you want results.
So what’s a better option?
Hiring a professional local web designer for a fair price will always be the best option for your business.
